Antoine Leclercq plays with the duality between the massive side of the raw material (in this case Corten steel) and the unexpected flexibility of the fine art of ironwork. It’s important to remember that Cortensteel is a self-patinated steel with a deliberate surface corrosion, mostly used outdoors for its beautiful rust-coloured patina and its resistance to the weather conditions.
Passionate about gardens and wide open spaces, Antoine belongs to a school of refinement which turns its back to any notion of unnecessary embellishments. The artist prefers simple and essential forms, with the desire to reveal a certain belief in the pure, almost sacred beauty of things.
Inspired by nature, his works tend to lean towards abstraction while remaining familiar, sensual and organic. Antoine Leclerq’s moving sculptures adorn our gardens like elegant punctuation marks, a dot on the letter “i”, or an ornament draped around the neck of a beautiful woman.
They allow for a new perspective of a place or a space, and participate in a subtle dialogue with their environment.

How did it all start?
I am a landscape architect by trade (graduated from the Faculty of Gembloux), but self-taught in the artistic field. It has always occurred to me that a work of art in a garden adds something extra. It has the ability to enhance the natural beauty of a place...as long as there is a dialogue between this work of art and the environment that surrounds it. I like to create a connection between metal (which is my favourite material) and the organic, even though many people think that metal is motionless. I, on the contrary, think that (Corten) steel evolves very superbly over time. From this perspective we can say it is a “living” material...
Why did you choose abstraction?
I find that abstraction gives me great freedom and allows me to better translate what I mean to say, especially to add momentum to my sculptures, a movement, an emotion, the search for balance, even exuberance or, on the contrary, restraint of a gesture. Abstract and simple, I humbly think that my sculptures are part of an almost figurative expression. Because the movements they impress make a difference.
Are your works as comfortable outside as they are inside?
In general I create sculptures intended to be exposed in a garden. But I also occasionally make “models” for the interior. They are often smaller in size and I cover the steel with hematite. It’s a cold patina that ages the steel and gives a blueish black appearance with an added depth on the surface.

The walk (or bike ride) runs along the sea dyke from Het Zoute towards Heist-West, and ends at CC Scharpoord, where from the 8th to the 16th August, the 45th edition of Art Nocturne Knocke takes place. For the upcoming edition of ANK, 40 stands will be provided this year. Ancient, modern and contemporary art and design will be displayed in an eclectic setting, which is qualitatively and refreshingly contemporary.
